South Pole (and nearby AWS sites) have recorded record warm temperatures on December 25, 2011. South Pole Meteorology Office notes the following:
“The temperature topped out at -12.3C/9.9F yesterday at 0250 UTC/1550 NZDT 12/25, not quite to 10F”
University of Wisconsin Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) at Nico and Henry AWS sites appear to have experienced record warm temperatures – and more will be posted on them after the data has been reviewed.
- Antarctic infrared composite satellite animation shows the warm temperature occurred with inflow from the grid South.
- The wind observations plotted on the satellite animation show the inflow from the grid South into the South Pole (marked in red)
- This animation has preliminary reports of temperatures from the Antarctic Automatic Weather Station (AWS) (and other staffed stations) before, during and after the record set at South Pole (marked in red) and nearby AWS sites.
